The artists involved act as the messengers, the "Voice of Nature", as all have sailed on the same life-changing expedition with the Los Angeles-based non-profit; 5Gyres. A a result, all have continued to actively use their personal art forms and art mediums to inspire change, spread awareness, in science and education.
The exhibit shares with the audience the artist’s “plastic” vision; starting from the ocean journey that brought us together, moving into the "Global Issue" of plastic pollution. The artists’ individual works are highlighted as a part of a chorus. The climactic conclusion is the audience understanding that "they too" are a part of the solution to a healthy planet and should join in and "Be the Change".

一、

Artists:Rangi, Karina, Jacob, Mariam and Sharlene
Creation concept:
Whales are magnificent, beautiful marine animals that also act as protectors of the ocean. Marine biologists have discovered that whales store a large amount of carbon dioxide in their bodies and provide nutrients to the seabed ecology after death. Therefore, whales are identified as a prime source of mitigating climate change in the ocean. However, due to human industrialization of whaling and the destruction of the marine environment, there are only a quarter of the original number of whales in the world today. And the largest of all, the blue whale, has dropped to 3% of the original number. In recent years, studies have found that marine debris is the main cause of death. Many whale have washed ashore all over the world, after dissection and investigation of the causes, it is found their intestines and stomachs is filled with garbage. Plastic Pollution kills over 100,000 marine animals every year, just like the blue whale in this painting. In its’ mouth garbage belonging to humans have carelessly been discarded into the sea. When it is about to suffocate, this whale sends a message to the world with its’ song. “No more harm to the planet. No more.”
Sea Level Rise is one of our most difficult problems to solve today. In this very moment, sea levels are rising, due to large ice sheet melting in the Artic and Antarctic. We are losing more ice every minute, because of human greenhouse gas release which causes warming of our planet’s atmosphere and oceans. In this heat, the Earth’s poles are vanishing like an ice cube in a glass of water, and as a result, oceans are growing larger and larger. What most people don’t know: oceans are highly dynamic systems causing sea levels, and Sea Level Rise, to be different in each location on Earth. In 2017, politicians around the world signed the Paris Agreement where they decided to allow only 1.5°C warming. In 2022, this boundary has already been crossed. If we continue our current greenhouse gas release, we will instead experience a warming of 5°C by 2100.
With this art installation, we want to allow everyone to experience the future sea level in five different locations: Taipei (Taiwan) 90cm, Jakarta (Indonesia) 85cm, Lagos (Nigeria) 90cm, Glasgow (United Kingdom) 54cm, New York (USA) 103cm. How tall are you? Walk around and imagine! This is the calculated sea level for these locations in the year 2100, if our temperature increases by 5°C. Be aware that some locations such as Jakarta will experience even higher risk of flooding in the future. This is because freshwater is being pumped out of the ground causing the city to sink. As a result, the sea level will be even higher (by an additional 1.8m). You can experience this effect by comparing the sea level line with the “water pole”. To this day, there is no solution on how to deal with the sea level challenge. What would you do if you were the Major of one of these cities?
